Return to work

Returning to work after the birth of your baby can be an exciting but stressful next step. In our service we have heard some variation of each of these statements above. For some women they relish the opportunity to go back to work and want to return as soon as practicable. For others, this return can be a sad and emotional time. And for others, it might be a time of mixed emotion- joy, sadness, stress, anxiety and guilt.

Returning to work after having a baby can have a significant impact on maternal mental health, bringing a mix of emotions ranging from relief and excitement to guilt and anxiety. While some mothers may find fulfillment in resuming their careers and reconnecting with their professional identity, others may struggle with separation anxiety, concerns about childcare, or feelings of inadequacy in balancing work and parenting responsibilities. Societal expectations and workplace policies—such as limited parental leave, inflexible schedules, or lack of breastfeeding support—can further heighten stress and feelings of overwhelm. A supportive work environment, access to flexible arrangements, and open conversations about mental health can ease this transition and help mothers maintain both their career goals and emotional well-being. Encouraging self-compassion and realistic expectations is crucial in navigating this period of adjustment.
