Pregnancy, birth and early motherhood can be emotionally demanding experiences. While many mothers benefit from psychological therapy, there are times when additional medical support may be helpful.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health. They are trained to assess more complex or persistent symptoms and can provide guidance about a range of treatment options.
Mums Matter is pleased to welcome Dr Beate Harrison, an experienced psychiatrist who works with adults experiencing a range of mental health concerns, including those that may arise during pregnancy and early parenthood. Dr Beate Harrison works alongside the Mums Matter team to provide additional specialist support when it is needed.
How appointments work
Appointments with Dr Beate Harrison are facilitated through our clinical partner, Call to Mind, who provide the administrative support for psychiatric consultations.
This allows Dr Beate Harrison to work closely with the Mums Matter team while ensuring appointments, referrals and billing are managed through an established specialist psychiatry service.

It can sometimes be difficult to know what kind of support is needed. If you are unsure whether seeing a psychiatrist may be helpful, our team can talk through your situation and help guide you toward the most appropriate next step.
Some mothers consider seeing a psychiatrist if they are experiencing:
-
Depression that feels difficult to manage
-
Anxiety, panic or intrusive thoughts
-
Symptoms related to birth trauma
-
Mental health difficulties that have not improved with therapy alone
-
More complex mental health concerns
A psychiatrist can provide a detailed assessment and talk through possible treatment options based on your individual circumstances.

Psychiatric care is often most helpful when it works alongside psychological support.
Where appropriate, psychiatrists may collaborate with your psychologist, GP or other healthcare providers to ensure care is thoughtful and well-coordinated.
The aim is always to support mothers in a way that feels safe, considered and appropriate to their needs.
Appointments with Dr Beate are provided as private specialist consultations and are not bulk billed. A GP referral is typically required, and depending on your referral and eligibility, a Medicare rebate may be available for part of the consultation fee.
Our team can provide further information about referrals, rebates and appointment fees when you enquire or book.
