Initial Telephone Consultation

Starting the process of treatment for a mental health condition is a big step and it is important that you engage the right help for the best outcomes.

That's why, before we book you in for your first appointment with a clinician, we go through a thorough process of ensuring this psychology practice is right for you and that you are ready to start treatment. We want you to make the most of your time and your Medicare rebated sessions by starting work with the right person straight away.

How do I start treatment?

We ask all new clients to speak with us on an initial 15-minute telephone call. We will answer any questions you have, and we will ask about the reasons you'd like to see one of our team. This ensures the practice is right for you and your clinician has a head start when preparing to meet you and your treatment needs.

The following screens will take you through the process of booking this initial consultation which will take you approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Before commencing, please watch this 10-minute video and read through these key points to ensure you have all the information to make an informed choice about booking with us. Please see our answers to frequently asked questions here or contact us to ask any further questions. PLEASE NOTE: This video mentions 20 Medicare rebated sessions per calendar year. From 1st January 2023, this will revert to 10 sessions per calendar year.

Is Mums Matter Psychology right for me?

Mums Matter Psychology practice will be right for you if:

  • You are experiencing mild-moderate perinatal depression, anxiety or stress-related disorder as assessed by your GP. Support is also provided to you if you have experienced birth trauma or pregnancy related loss, e.g. stillbirth, miscarriage, or termination, or are experiencing infertility issues.

  • If you are in the postnatal period, your child/ren are under the age of 4

  • You understand that psychological treatment is different than going to your GP for a medical condition. You have to be actively involved for psychological treatment to work. You can do this by:

    • speaking honestly about what’s going on in your life, and in your mind

    • giving your therapist feedback on how you’re doing

    • asking questions

    • attending all your appointments

    • completing any ‘homework’ you are asked to do.

  • You understand we can provide a total of 20 bulk-billed (no out of pocket expense) sessions under Medicare if you have a mental health care plan from your GP (but 10 in each calendar year).

  • You understand there are still some private fees such as a $30 deposit for your first session (refundable once attended) and a cancellation fee. A gap fee applies after 20 bulk-billed sessions.

Are there any circumstances in which this wouldn't be the right place for me to receive treatment?

We believe your psychological recovery will be better served by other services if:

  • You have a current or enduring psychotic illness or eating disorder

  • You have long-standing suicidal or homicidal ideation or suicide attempts without a current psychiatrist currently providing you care

  • You have current involvement with child protection and Family and Community Services without case management support

  • You have current excessive alcohol or other drug use without Drug & Alcohol service support

In these circumstances, we are unable to provide the special knowledge for treatment and follow-up care that will be best for your recovery.

Please note we do not provide Cognitive Assessments or formal assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

We do not provide one-off assessments for Court proceedings.

Is there a waitlist for starting treatment?

PLEASE NOTE: Currently we are experiencing a high level of demand for our services resulting in a wait time for beginning treatment:

  • The next available initial telephone consultation is 2-3 weeks from now.

  • The anticipated wait for beginning treatment is 3-4 months from your initial telephone consultation.

The waiting time for treatment varies depending on a large number of factors which we will discuss with you in the initial call. If you join the waitlist, you are able to remove yourself from this list at any time if you find somewhere suitable for you at an earlier time.

Things you will need to book this call

  • Your Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and Referral from your GP (can be uploaded as photos from your phone or a PDF document). If your GP has already faxed us a copy of your Mental Health Care Plan our administration team will have been in contact to confirm this with you. Please continue with your booking. If you have not heard from us, please contact your GP to send this.

  • Valid credit or debit card details. These details will be held securely but NO PAYMENT will be taken now. These details will be used to process a holding deposit of $30 at the time you begin treatment.  This holding deposit will be refunded once you have attended your first full appointment with a therapist. If your first appointment is not attended or less than 24 hours notice of cancellation is provided, this $30 holding fee is non-refundable.
